The boroughs of Bellmawr, Mount Ephraim, and Lawnside were simultaneously created during the same two-day period.[21] The derivation of the borough’s name is uncertain, though claims that it derives from a Native American term for “running water” have been refuted and connections to General George Meade or to “rum we need” for a nearby tavern are probably apocryphal.[22] Sources have cited the name as coming from Runnymede, England.[23]

Byram Township, New Jersey
Byram Township was created by an act by the New Jersey General Assembly on February 5, 1798, from portions of the now-defunct Newton Township, and was incorporated on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey’s initial group of 104 townships.[22] The township was named for the Byram family, who were early settlers in the area.[22][23][24] Patriarch Jephthah Byram and his family, were believed to have emigrated to the area after the American Revolutionary War.[23] Before being named Byram, the community had been called Lockwood, and the Lockwood Tavern continued to hold this original name until its demolition in 2015. In 1829, a section of Green Township was incorporated into the township.[22] Portions of the township have been taken to form Sparta Township (April 14, 1845), Brooklyn borough (March 24, 1898, now called Hopatcong) and Stanhope borough (March 24, 1904).[22]

Riverside Township, New Jersey
Riverside was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 20, 1895, from portions of Delran Township.[20] A portion of the township was annexed by Delran in 1901.[21] The township was originally named Progress which was changed to Riverside for its location on the Delaware River.[22]
North Hanover Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 12, 1905, from portions of New Hanover Township. Portions of the township were taken on March 4, 1918, to form Wrightstown.[19][20]
Bernardsville was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 6, 1924, from portions of Bernards Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 29, 1924.[22] The borough was named for Sir Francis Bernard, 1st Baronet, who served as governor of the Province of New Jersey.[23] In 2009, part of the borough was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Olcott Avenue Historic District.[24]
The borough’s name is derived from the Raritans, a Native American group of Lenapes.[21] The name of the tribe is said to mean “forked river”,[22] “stream overflows” or “point on a tidal river”.[23][24]
In 1666, 64 Connecticut families led by Robert Treat bought land from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans and named it New Ark to reflect a covenant to worship freely without persecution. The territory included the future towns of Bloomfield, Montclair, Belleville and Nutley. When Bloomfield was established in 1812, Glen Ridge was a section “on the hill” composed mostly of farms and woodlands with the exception of a thriving industrial area along Toney’s Brook in the glen.[20] For most of the nineteenth century, three water-powered mills produced lumber, calico, pasteboard boxes and brass fittings. A copper mine and a sandstone quarry were located on the north side of the brook.[21]
What is now Mansfield Township was formed on May 30, 1754, as Mansfield-Woodhouse Township from portions of Greenwich Township, while the area was still part of Sussex County, and was incorporated as Mansfield Township on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey’s initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The township became part of the newly formed Warren County on November 20, 1824. Portions of the township were taken to form Franklin Township (April 8, 1839) and Washington Township (April 9, 1849).[20] The township was named after William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield.[3]
Bloomingdale’s Federal Hill was the site of the 1781 Pompton Mutiny, a winter revolt of Continental Army troops that was crushed by General Robert Howe on direct orders of General George Washington.[20]
