Franklin Lakes, New Jersey

Franklin Lakes was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 11, 1922, from portions of Franklin Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 11, 1922.[21][22][23] The borough was named for William Franklin, the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, a steadfast Loyalist who served as the last colonial Governor of New Jersey.[24][25]

Wantage Township, New Jersey

Wantage Township was formed as a precinct on May 30, 1754, from portions of Newton Township. It was incorporated as a township on February 21, 1798, as part of the state’s initial group of 104 townships. Boundary exchanges were made with Frankford Township in both 1826 and 1834. Portions of the township were taken on October 14, 1891 to form the Borough of Deckertown (renamed Sussex borough in 1902).[19] The township was named for Wantage, England.[20]

Pompton Lakes, New Jersey

Pompton Lakes was established on February 26, 1895 from portions of Pompton Township, based on the results of a referendum held three days earlier.[23] The borough was named for the Pompton people, a sub-tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area.[24] It was the first borough to be formed in Passaic County as part of the “boroughitis” that had struck the state at the time. Pompton Lakes did not acquire territory from more than one township, which would have entitled the borough to a seat on the County’s Board of Chosen Freeholders.[25]

Ocean City, New Jersey

Ocean City originated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 3, 1884, from portions of Upper Township, based on results from a referendum on April 30, 1884, and was reincorporated as a borough on March 31, 1890. Ocean City was incorporated as a city, its current government form, on March 25, 1897.[21][22] The city is named for its location on the Atlantic Ocean.[23][24]

Westwood, New Jersey

Westwood was officially incorporated as a borough on May 8, 1894, from portions of Washington Township, early during the “Boroughitis” phenomenon then sweeping through Bergen County, in which 26 boroughs were formed in the county in 1894 alone.[25][26] Isaac D. Bogert served as the first mayor of the Borough.[27] In April 1909, Westwood was enlarged through the annexation of the “Old Hook” section of the borough of Emerson,[28] and on September 24, 1957, portions of the borough were exchanged with Emerson.[25]
